Default Nu metal.

The term "Nu metal" makes any real metalhead's stomach twist in disgust. In case you are unfamiliar with nu metal, it is a simplified approach to extreme metal music that has been popular in the US for some time. Bands of this genre include: Korn, Limp Bizkit, Chimaira, Soulfly, Disturbed, Drowning Pool, Static X, Deftones, Mudvayne, Flaw, Dry Kill Logic, Slipknot, ... It's also referred to as "modern hard rock" or commercial metal. It can be argued that these bands are completely talentless, since their music contains absolutely no depth whatsoever, but that is just my opinion.
There are two Nu metal bands, however, that do kick ass: Devildriver(due to their influences from real forms of metal), and System of a Down(which have some very good songs and very boring ones). What do you think of this music?

Oh yes, and if you are still unsure of what Nu metal is... read this.

There is a few Nu Metal-bands I enjoy, like System Of A Down, Korn, Ill Nio and Chimaira (but I've never considered Chimaira Nu though), but apart from those bands I dislike the genre.

While we're at it, can someone please explain the difference between Hardcore and Nu?

System of a Down is great, I really like their album Toxicity and I think Drowning Pool was decent, too bad the lead singer OD'ed

Edit: You need an "It's OK" option

Thanks to Onestroke and a little research of my own, I finally see the difference between hardcore and Nu.

Basically, hardcore is not metal at all. It has some influences from metal, and some from punk. The occasionally use breakdowns(do not ask me about this ) like some metalcore bands. The singing consists of basically screaming with an occasional pop-punk style clean vocals. The riffs sound like plain metalcore, same goes for drumming.

Nowadays, a lot of hardcore bands rip-off the sweet melodic Gothenburg riffs and use it in their songs. Oh yes, and hardcore bands do not have long hair(most of the time a dead giveaway), do not proclaim their music to be metal(thank god), and fans preform something called hardcore dancing in moshpits and such, which consists of swinging around your arms and legs to beat the shit out of anyone who gets close. Lyrical themes are about personal struggles or just a tough view towards life. Examples of hardcore: Atreyu, Avenged Sevenfold, Martyr Ad, Hatebreed(more metalcore though), Throwdown, 12 Tribes, Converge(correct me if I'm wrong, they are screamo, not hardcore?). Napalm Death(grindcore legends) now do music more aimed at the hardcore audience... I too hate this kind of music... except for maybe the band Unearth, which is pretty much metalcore anyways. I just find it completely... boring.

I already knew you listened to Korn, Howie... But seriously, don't you still think they suck? I mean, they are the crappiest of Nu metal bands IMO. Basically throw three guitar riffs that require an IQ of 2 to play, inaudiable bass(due to stupid unneeded distortion), whiny singing about themes that sound evil(but aren't), whiny vocals from a pothead, and add simple drumming and you have a Korn song. Being a Norwegian BM fan... I can't see why you aren't disgusted by Korn yet. Don't care much for Chimaira and I haven't listened to Ill Nio(and now I don't think I will ).

Daedric: Most of the time this genre is a love or hate type thing. Nu metal fans instantly dismiss all other metal as "gay", but they've never even given it a listen. Metalheads call the music crappy and uninspired, and this kind of music generally doesn't appeal to everyone(although this can be argued since it is basically pop metal). I remember when I showed a hardcore Korn fan a song by Deicide earlier this year... it was great.

I'd be a hypocrite if I said I've never listened to nu metal. Like most metalheads my age, I was brought into modern metal because of Nu metal bands like Limp Bizkit and Disturbed(and later on Slipknot), but in about 5 months I realized just how crappy their music was.

I like their debut only (and some songs on Untouchables). Blind is fucking awesome, you'll have to admit that.
You like Limp Bizkits first album, I like Korns first album

And yes, Slipknots first album (Mate.Feed.Kill.Repeat) is good.

System Of A Down is one of my favorite bands, and I like Slipknot's first album, but other than that I don't like Nu. I completely agree with Soeru on Korn. They suck.

*downloads and listens to "Blind"*

Yes, I've heard this song before... and I am still unimpressed. Although I was a nu metal kid back in the day, I never liked Korn one bit. The only song I could bear was one of the later ones... "Here to Stay" I think was the song, but only because of the half-decent build up later in the song. Really boring, man.

SoaD are pretty good... they have some very nice songs, I just hate how their lyrics are completely incoherent, meaningless, and lame... the singing does make you ignore this though.

Edit: Oh, I forgot to mention that SK's "first album" was partly decent(although it embodies what Nu metal is really). Their "real first album"(Mate.Feed.Kill.Repeat) was infinitely superior, although I haven't listened to it much. From then on, the only songs worth listening to were "People=Shit"(for the drumming and proggression), and "Left Behind"(for the cool main riff). This is just my view, so Slipknot fans: do not feel offended(I know there are some on these boards). Oh yes, and Corey Taylor is an ass.

I demand a third option - some nu-metal is good. Although the genre is pretty stale now. Only one's who seem to be still doing anything decent for it are Slipknot, Ill Nino and Deftones. Korn have become the Metallica of nu-metal. And Soeru, download Ball Tongue, Good God, Faget, Clown and Divine from Korn.

I grabbed those songs... seriously, I am unimpressed. Nu metal has more to offer than Korn. Funny thing, I just came across a torrent for a free sampler CD called "DeSlipknotizing the Youth", containing tracks from real metal bands with the intention of converting Nu metal fans over to real metal. Go and give it a try.

Oh yeah, btw, that band Devildriver I keep bitching about:

http://www.roadrun.com/shared/downlo...areLess(1).mp3

http://www.roadrun.com/shared/downlo...DieNow)(1).mp3

Now that is Nu metal worth listening to. It's not your typical Soulfly-ish mothafucka-you-don't-understand-so-jump-the-fuck-up nu metal gobshite. It's actually quite good, even from a death metal standpoint. The rest of their album is also very good. The lyrics, like all Nu metal, are uninspired and suck... but the instrumentals and singing are exceptional... save for an occasional set of boring riffs in a few songs.

I do like some nu-metal bands actually, bands like Ill Nino, Drowning Pool(first album, second one sucked horribly), KoRn, Slipknot(first album, not much I like after that), System of a Down and Spineshank are good bands in my opinion. Some of it I hate with a passion though: Godsmack, Papa Roach, Disturbed(some of their stuff is alright, for the most part...meh) and Static X.

The options on the poll aren't broad enough. It's either "I hate it" or "I love it," there's not enough variation. Too black and white.

Anyways. I think it's okay. Not the best, not the worst. I like some of it depending on the approach they take. I'm a huge Slipknot fan and like all of their albums save for Iowa, which had only a couple of good songs on it (you have to admit, Left Behind was good!)

I'm adding the option "It's okay in moderation" to the list. Kay? Kay.

While I'm at it, I think Slipknot would be so much more respected if they didn't have a couple of people in their band that does absolutely nothing. There are too many people on stage just jumping around and banging the shit out of each other, it presents the Soulfly "Jump the fuck up!" presentation that Soeru was complaining about. If they dumbed it down to the original number of members (I think it was 5 on Mate.Feed.Kill.Repeat, right?) then they would probably get a little more attention. Of course, Mate.Feed.Kill.Repeat was done by a completely different band when you look at it, so meh.

I actually quite like the new CD, The Subliminal Verses. They've matured quite a lot. They only curse once on the CD -- I actually don't like listening to bands that spend the entire time swearing, even if it's just a few curses in every song -- 'cause it presents too much of a "Cursing is the way to express all your fucking anger." They've started to incorporate slower songs and differents sounds into their albums, and it feels like they've really come together quite well over the years.

Could just be me trying to justify listening to them almost every day, though.

Nu-metal. Well, pop-nu-metal. Probably the most "radio friendly" band to come from nu-metal.
