    Default Whats the ip?

People I know that the IP is what identifies you on the net. But I would like to know how does it work, how are IP numbers generated and how is the FBI able to know where you live by your IP(ive heard that)

The 4 different numbers have different meanings. I think the way it works is that your isp has one like the 2nd number and then it divides further geographicly. It is where major geographic areas have a certain first number and then as you move down you narrow the area. I think that is how it works. I hope you understand.

The FBI can track you down with your IP, yeah. I wouldn't worry thoug, unless your trying to hack into the Pentagon database (which would be cool..) IP's are assigned based on you Geographical location. the first 2 sets of numbers are your location, and the last 2 are the amount of computers on your network (about 65025 on a single network, that is a shitload of computers in the one spot.)

You can prevent your self being detected by hiding behind a proxy server. there are programs that can hide you behind many proxy servers at a time. Try Socks Chain or FreeCap.

As far as what IP is you can get a complete description on How Stuff Works.

Plz Remember if some goverment agency is after you then most probably they will still catch you bcos proxy servers also mentain logs. but you can hide yourself behind multiple proxies in more than one countries which could delay such a probe or might make it impossible in case some proxy server in between just flushes out its logs.

Yes, knowing what an IP is makes you a major hacker...

I thought they had to ask your ISP who the IP belonged to out of their customers, but I may be wrong.

I havnt bothered reading the howthingswork thing yet.

Certainly they will have to take help of your ISP but there is a bit more than that
If you have a lease line or something with which a static IP is given to you than tracking you will be just piece of cake for them.
If you are given a dynamic IP or you are sharing an IP pool with other ppl by NAT or sth similar then they will need to tell not only the IP which they logged but also the time at which they logged it because the global IP you used will also be assisgned to some one else too.
