    Wow. I sence hostility Del_Boy!

You know what man, I use a SHITLOAD of bandwidth. I'm always uploading and downloading constantly, and have never, I REPEAT, NEVER recieved such a message from Cox.
And y'know, I've also never had to get any sort of permission from them to use an FTP, IN ANY CAPACITY, be it to downloading shit, or as a "pub" as you put it.

Look, if or when I get such a message, then I will concede that I was mistaken, but till that happens I'll stand by what I've said. I have no reason not to, having used Cox's service for some time without issue. And y'know, I wasn't trying to make you look silly or anything, I'm just saying that my ISP has thus far stood behind it's promise of offering unlimited bandwidth, despite your claims that none of them do. *shrugs*

Look, their is no such thing as an unlimited bandwidth ISP or website provider. You may see that advertised all the time, but unlimited isn't in the sense the average customer is led to believe.

Bandwith costs - big bucks. You think we click on those banners all the time just for fun?

You may not have fallen foul of your ISPs AUP, and you may not ever. That doesn't negate that fact that an AUP on bandwidth usage does indeed exist.

Put it this way, perhaps the ratio of bandwidth users to abusers on Cox is very low, and thus they are willing to be extra lenient.

A 'pub' as I put it, as I am sure you are aware simply means public FTP. Believe me there is a world of difference between a private pub whereby you may use it for trades, and one whereby you perhaps put the latest UT2004 demo up as a mirror :/ (using that as a relevant 1 night only example). Again this detail was taken from the AUP.

I bought an 'unlimited' service. I asked you if the Cox High-Speed Internet service is rate limited, and you said no. This doesn't sound like the 'unlimited' service I signed up for. What happened?

Cox provides, as advertised, unlimited access to the Internet. However, Cox neither advertises nor provides unlimited service; as bandwidth is a finite commodity. Cox High Speed Internet is still advertised as being "downstream speeds up to 100 times faster than a 28.8 telephone modem" and remains the best service, quality, features, and speed for the price.

My total bandwith usage last month:
    DL: 189.6 GB
    UL: 44.1 GB

No calls, no messages, no nothing...

I have to agree with Cyber on this I have had cable broadband for 3 years, and I run Overnet, WinMx, the FTP etc. I have let these programs run for weeks on end.

Never have I received anything even hinting I was using more than my fair share. I believe this is because my fair share is: all of it I want. (or need, depending on how you view it). If I am the only one on my node using bandwidth, I bother no one. If 100 or more people are on, then I don't get as much as I usually do. It is dynamic, with my individual computer having no control: I can't suck up 'all' of it.

With the huge throughput cable offers (I don't know the exact number, and don't really care) my 3 to 4 Megabits downspeed is a drop in the bucket.

    That's my view.

Again I shall state the fact that you may use hundreds of GBs per month does not mean you have unlimited bandwidth. It just means your ISP is lax in enforcing it.

Believe me if it starts affecting other peoples service and perhaps more importantly the balance sheets, you'll see just how your 'unlimited' package will become a 'limited' one.

Again I'm not saying - if you use your bandwidth up constantly 24/7 full speed you will be collared.

    I hereby issue a challenge

Anyone who uses an ISP with an 'Unlimited bandwidth' then please provide me with the name Prove me wrong and I will apologise in 10ft high letters.

Yeah man I know you're right. All I'm trying to say is that, although there is a limit, it is set so high that it isn't a problem for me.

As long as people who use the service to the full remain in the minority, an ISP is probably loathe to do anything to enforce an AUP (brings bad publicity).

Regardless if you have broadband use the bandwidth you have available as much as you like If you ever exceed the limits (some ISPs let you downloads GBs upon GBs worth of stuff) others cap you to perhaps 1gb per day (NTL/BT AFAIK do this). In some countries there are even limits per month, some at very low levels.

Yup, there's one in Australia that limits you to 3BG per month... I don't know which it is though... Toto's on it.

Look man, I don't understand why you feel the need to argue this anyway. Simply put, the facts speak for themselves, and wether or not it is an issue of them being lax on some hidden limit, or that there really isn't one, the fact is that I use quite a bit of bandwidth a month with absolutely no limitations imposed on me by my ISP. It's simply not something you can argue, Del_Boy, as regardless of the circumstances behind it, I've NEVER had a limit imposed on me.

And as I already stated, on the off chance Cox suddenly does crack down on my bandwidth usage, then I'll apologise and acceed that I was wrong. Until then, I think we should all just lay this discussion to rest, especially given just how stubborn you're being.

I got one of those once...but it was a little bit more of a phone call with alot of swearing...I suppose they don't like 30 gigs of traffic to one computer in 8 hours...hehe

I just spent the last 20 minutes or so reading my Fair Use Policy. The closest they come to saying I have a bandwidth limit is 'make the service degrade for others'. They also state that ftp is frowned upon. But then they have a FAQ on how to set up a server!?

Del_Boy, I understand your point. But remember, cable is always on; so in this case 'unlimited' has to refer to something other than connection time. All cable connections are unlimited time (unless a car clips a pole)

*side note* According to my FUP I am not allowed to host a game server (Unreal Tournament?) access newsgroups (WTF?) or provide network capabilities to more than 1 machine. (screw them, I will home network my systems if I want to)

Well, damn...I was just wondering if anyone else had this type of problem ... not actually causing such a big argument over the forum.

Frankly right now I'm a bit pissed off at my internet provider for even sending me emails + phone calls on my freaken voicemail telling me this bullsh*t. Anyone know a good internet provider in (Scarborough) Toronto, Ontario, Canada?

The two I know in my area are Rogers Cable and Bell Sympatico DSL >< I honestly don't know how good Bell is but I've heard bad things about their services as well.

Any information about a better internet provider in my area would be appreciated.

Shaw high speed cable internet hasn't given me any problems yet, and I've been using alot of bandwidth as of late.
I am in no way responsible for the above post. It was my hand's fault. Bad hand.

Well, I just phoned their f**ken help line, they told me "there isn't really a limit" *cough bullsh-t* if there isn't really a limit why am i getting these fuken warnings. They say it's just the average of what I do. I'm asking them what's the exact amount I'm allowed to use and they've not answered my question...I've gone from talking to the stupid rep. to the superviser....and they can't give me the exact BANDWIDTH I'm allowed to use per week or per month. They keep saying the same sh*t...they even told me to read the AUP which I did and they say some crap like 'within reasonable usage of bandwidth'....that statement is so farfetched....my reasonable usage is having my connection go on 24/7 uploading + downloading at the same time. Whereas it could be to them download 1GB per day...that statement is so....well depends on different people's point of view.

    This is all bullsh*t..

Hehe, I never got a letter like that, but what I did get is a letter telling me that the speeds of the account type I'm using are getting upgraded from 1500/128 to 2500/384 . This would be something I would much rather hear, then them complaining about how much I download / upload .
