That's not what made the books so interesting. It was the step towards such an interesting and well-thought out world such as Middle-Earth that allowed the readers to escape and follow the adventures of Frodo and Sam or to read through the Battle of Helms Deep or the Battle for Middle-Earth with a very descriptive and thoroughly captivating style that makes "Lord of the Rings" so marvelous. Tolkein has a very distinct style that can become rather annoying if you aren't willing to read through the novel's more mundane portions, which is why I could never really get into him until I was almost 13 years old.Originally posted by Toto
[B]The Lord of the Rings and the Silmarillion are in no way exciting, in my opinion. An event followed by a chapter of description isn't the mark of a good writer. Writing shouldn't beat about the bush.
