    Default PSX to ship for $750 via Sony

    Originally posted at ircspy
    Sony will offer its PSX PlayStation-***-personal video recorder for under $800, the consumer electronics giant said yesterday.
    Two models will ship later this year in Japan, one with a 160GB hard drive, the other with 250GB of hard disk storage - the latter enough to hold 13 and a half days' worth of TV programming, and both larger than the 120GB capacity originally planned for the machine. As yet Sony has not said which of these will be offered to overseas markets - or when.

    The Japanese models - dubbed the DESR-5000 and DESR-7000, respectively - will be priced at a US equivalent of $750 and $907. In addition to TiVO-style features, the machines contain PlayStation 2, which also provides PlayStation 1 compatibility.
    Programmes recorded on the hard drive can be transferred to DVD using the machines' built in DVD-R/RW drive. A DVD+RW version will be coming further down the line, Sony said. Current machines also provide a Memory Stick slot and a USB port for peripherals.
    The PSX is the first Sony system to be based on the company's home grown 90nm EE+GS@90nm processor, which combines the PS2's Emotion Engine and Graphics Synthesiser chips on a single die. Sony is increasingly trying to pull chip development in-house, using its own silicon to drive all future hardware products.
    Looks like im not getting one, thats way too much money by my taste.

    That is interesting. Are there any pics of this thing floating around yet? I wonder what features they will include in the PS3.

    If I start saving now, I'll be able to afford one when they've been obsolete for 20 years...

    The PSX is awfully cheap if you look at all the stuff Sony packed into the little box. It's not at all only a PS2 and a DVD burner.

    I think that's a bad idea from sony. It's way too pricey and not many will buy it. You can get a better system if you just bought a ps2 and a computer anyways.

    $200... PS2 online (online ready w/atv offroad)
    $340... emachines pc (athlon2000+, 128mb ddr2100, 40gb hd, speakers&mouse&key... blah blah)
    $ 50... geforce4mx (for svideo/dvi outs for TV hookup)
    $ 40... leadtech tv tuner (TV&FM reception, s-video in, audio in/outs)
    $110... 4x lite-on dvd/rw
    $240... maxtor 250gb 7200

    which gives you a grand total of $980. (free shipping from newegg for computer stuff)
    With that extra $70 spent you end up with the ps2 plus a whole computer that's not too shabby.

    You can also...

    -Exchange the geforce4mx for a radeon9000atlantis if you'd rather have vga in/out and another svideo in than a dvi out.
    -upgrade the computer where you want if you want to spend the extra $$$
    -Save $100 and get the maxtor 160gb hd.

    ...or if you get real thrifty, save a total of $180 downgrading to a samsung 160gb 7200rpm hd, radeon7000, and a regular ps2 without network adapter or the free game. that's $800 total.

    so I was bored... shoot me.

    But the thing is the PSX is very limited in capabilities, you can't just burn anything on that DVD writer, or put just on the harddrive, anything illegal is ruled out and so the usual things you can do like make backup movies are probably cut.

    That's what I heard anyway.

    It's crazy out of all outrageous things to do, priceing the darned thing that much to me is not reasonable even for what it does, and yes I do know that the psx is not meant to be ONLY a video game system but still hows about some reasonable priceing here folks.

    If you look at everything that they have crammed in there, it's a pretty good starting price. Note that: starting price. Anyone remember how expensive DVD-RW were when they were first released? About $400US. The price will drop eventually on these things, probably to about $450-$600, which is a very good price for everything they have in there.

    I'm a little lost. Is this what the PS3 was supposed to be? Like, was this originally called the PS3.
    I reckon it's stupid. I can play PS2 games on my damn PS2, same with PS1 games. I already own a computer, minus a DVD burner. Nowhere in the article has it announced a compatability with sexier games.

    i personaly think this may be Sony's first partical flop.. due to the very limited consumer base.. partly due to the number of people who already own a PS2..(few people who own a PS2 will buy this, or so i guess) and the huge price tag involved..

    Yeah. The N-Gage has already bombed, the PSP might bomb as well, and so may the PSX...not a good time for "new" consoles. I see this as a neat item available to a small clientele. Sure, it's a good value, but $750 is still a lot of money to drop at one time.

    Truly though, I'm more concerned about the durability of the PSX. What if most have the shaky track record of PS2s, even with proper maintenance and cleaning?

    To my knowledge, no, this was never intended to be a PS3. I think they are just redoing the ps2 a bunch of times to fill the time before they finish and release the PS3.

    Sony probably thinks that they can keep making money off newer machines that are basically PS2's with more added features in two ways. The first way is they are trying to make it more appetising to people who don't already have a PS2. The other way is that they probably think that people will buy the PS3 when it comes out even if they arleady have a PSone and a PS2.

    I personally think they should just focus on the PS3 and stop making new PS2's with the added features because I want to see the PS3 and I also think that most of the people who are going to buy a PS2 probably already have by now. About the second point, this is just repeating history. They did it with the first playstation. There was the original, then the smaller PSone, then they bundled that with a LCD setup that you could take with you on the road. Now, with the PS2 we have the original, then the different color special editions that are no different, then the Silver one that plays burned dvds, now the PSX. I really hope they are done doing this because it's pretty lame. I'm not saying the machines they are making are lame. I am saying it's lame the way they keep trying to sell the PS2 in different ways. I just wish they would just focus on the PS3. And damnit, just make it a kickass gaming console!!!! All that the extra features really mean to me is that the pricetag is bigger and there are more ways that the machine can fail. Although, at the time they made the PS2, the fact that it plays dvds was pretty damn cool since a lot of people still didn't have a dvd player. Now, they are common place however.
