PS2 plays games best on 4.3gb, single layer DVD.
Only CD based games of which there are not very many, can be backed up to CD.
The CD standard format is 700 mb not 800 meaning, it probably wont work.
The CD spins fast in PS2 and makes a LOUD noise which ruins your game immersion.
DVD is the way to go. Most CD games can be converted with UltraISO easily.
DVDs are also dirt cheap, use DVD.

That's not necessarily true. PS1 games are on 650MB standard discs, and higher density 700MB CDRs work fine there. The various sizes on CDRs are presumably within some set of CD standards, so I don't see any reason to assume 800MB discs wouldn't work. However, 800MB CDRs cost a lot more than the usual discs, and it's always YMMV if a particular brand/batch of discs work well in your specific system. So I wouldn't suggest starting trying burning games with them, use something else.
*PSA* Wii Redump collector's can now unscrub ISO files. So scrubbed games can now be verified. You can find the program to do this here
I just decided to download epsxe and play on my pc with a ps4 controller
