Last few times I played I had some modded spells that have 0 cast cost. But besides that crazy mayhem/invisibility spell I hardly ever use magic.

in one guide I was reading it suggested creating a spell to set your skill to 0 than go to a trainer for "quick leveling" the only problem with that is you need access to the university first.

I feel like in general combat just isn't fun in TES games. I almost feel shoehorned into stealth every time.

I did have a lot of fighter builds back when I played Morrowind a lot but I'm not a heavy magic user in any game tbh. Enchantments are a different story.
Yeah stealth is my preferred style.

Have you tried repeatedly jumping in the Riften forge and healing yourself? The game also thinks you're causing fire damage to yourself and gives you free Destruction xp.

Otherwise turning undead is supposed to give good xp.

FYI Destruction skill increases charge efficiency for Destruction enchants.

I think Stealth killed Oblivion for me. I made 100%+ suit of chameleon enchants and nothing could see me. I walked up to anything, hit it, and watch it not even be alerted...

odd didn't know about that trick. it's not like destruction magic is hard to level.
