The only standalone players I'd consider all cost more than the consoles .

Don't be a retard. My last BD player is completely RF and cost less than $100au.
Using consoles to play DVD/BD discs is what teenagers do...then wonder why their PS3 gets ylod or 360 rrod. "But I hardly played any games on it!"

    I already have 2x ylod PS3's.
The only 360 I've ever had is still working fine

I've had the slim PS3 for 5+ years and it's mainly been on BD duty for at least a couple now.

Gyp bought the PS4 so it's succeeding the PS3 in that use. If I bought a standalone player it'd be a BDP-103 or 105, both of which are more than a PS4 .

I don't see the point spending that much on a player myself. If you can get one used for less than half retail maybe.
I'd spend money on good speakers (if I needed to) or maybe a receiver, but still not top end anyway even for those things.

I still have my first BD player too, which incidently has a fat PS3 drive. When I got that new it was less than a third of the cost of a PS3 (which I didn't have or get until much later).
2 main reasons why I got another player: old player only accepts fat32 format HDDs, old player is DVD RF but BD locked. Also now that I have 2 I use the old one in the bedroom.

To me using a game console for things other than games is sacrilegious, especially since PS3/360 units can fail (although my slims both seem fine).

It shouldn't be hard to find a BD player just as good as PS3, brand new and cheaper. I've compared my old one to PS3 and I can't tell the difference, even upscaling DVD.

    Mostly it's a space issue.

I plan on budgeting out $2000ish for a stereo speaker setup at some point.

I mean, I have a couple garbage blu-ray players too. They were like $5 each and both suck.

Mine were cheap but they aren't garbage. I mean you've been using a PS3 which is the same as my old player, only the console is more expensive.
My newer player well you probably can't get it there anyway, because the US loves to hate on RF players. It explicitly states it on the box, it isn't a hidden function or something you can unlock using a code or changing firmware.

My mains are alright, I mean they're old limited run stuff but not top end quality even back then.
I didn't spend that much but I did look at some JBL's around the same time that were close to that iirc.

I'm still happy with them anyway

The MAFIAA would have a conniption if they didn't keep their chokehold on the market as tightly as possible.

My budget is aimed at having no intention of replacing them short of failure.

I haven't checked recently but they should be worth more than what I paid. I'm not sure if they hand build pairs now I'd have to check that too
