Official Australian federation was 1901, before that there were separate British colonies. The process of federation started in the late 19th century though and I think at some point Fiji and New Zealand colonies might have been involved

Technically New Zealand was an extension of the New South Wales colony until about the mid 19th century then it became an independent colony...I think it got official dominion status several years after Australian federation.

So confusion about Australia and New Zealand might have been understandable 100 or so years ago.

Can you help me find Australia?

It's close to Antarctica and has claim to the largest portion of that continent.
