THE BEST METHOD to run PSX games (and everything else for that matter) is via Retroarch - http://buildbot.libretro.com/nightly/
If you have any questions on how to set it up on Windows please feel free to ask, its very easy.
I remember more kids having that than the NES. It might've been cheaper I'm not sure.
C64 was very popular here too.
Spoiler warning:
I'm a bit younger than you but things were similar here when I was a kid. Mega Drives were top of the heap, followed very closely by Amigas. Everyone seemed to have one or the other. SNES was also fairly popular of course but it was nowhere near the same level. There were still quite a lot of Master Systems and C64s around too but to this day I've never met anyone over here who had a NES. Totally anecdotal I know but it kind of boggles my mind.
Yeah SNES was popular, I had one myself for a short period. Mega Drive was popular enough but I never had one, Dreamcast was rare (mostly used in arcade cabinets really, that's where I saw most of them irl).
Amiga was popular too, but a few people had Atari ST.
Stuff like Spectrum was rare, but a few people had them. Most had C64, myself and most of my friends did anyway.
Spoiler warning:
I think the rarity of NES was due to pricing. Amiga/Atari ST was a little different as it was usually older kids that had them, different scenario anyway because of piracy.
But yeah for kids of all ages, including the really young, I guess many parents couldn't justify the extra money for NES when there was a cheaper system with plenty of titles (although not the same games).
Spoiler warning:
First system I can recall wanting (I mean asking my parents/family for) would've been Atari 2800. Never got one but a few friends had them, after that I gave up asking for a bit until C64 and I got that. Family wasn't rich or poor but made fairly sensible decisions...you couldn't make backups of cart based systems yourself on the cheap, but taped based games were easy. You just needed a dual cassette deck (which I got as well).

Spoiler warning:
It's also a licensed anime game. But honestly, it's a decent game.
Brazil too apparently.
Yeah Nintendo was king here. I'm sure there were pockets where some things were pretty popular but overall Nintendo basically dominated until Sony threw their hat into the ring.
