    They're pickled cucumbers.
    Plenty of other things are pickled, my grandmother made great pickled pumpkin when she was alive.

    Yeah it was nice stuff, a tiny little bit sweet 'cos of the sugar added. She also made potato pancakes (savory), German style dark rye bread and a seemingly plain lettuce salad that had a creamy dressing with dill added (and a little sugar).
    My grandfather would catch then smoke fish and eels (freshwater).

    The fish he would get was local, so brown & rainbow trout with some redfin sometimes (a smaller fish).
    Salmon isn't local, and isn't actually strictly freshwater (it's both).
