Recently Watched Movies

Just watched District 9 today. Read an online review that suggested it would be a thoughtful morality tale about how people treat each other, using aliens as a metaphor. It was that for about 15 minutes, then wavered into "humans = bad" territory before just becoming a full blown action flick half way through. Unlikable main character, poorly defined villains, and aliens who don't speak our language and are not given subtitles mute any impact the story had.

Honestly, it was disappointing.

Watched It Follows with my little brother yesterday. Creeeeeeeepy! I watch so many horror movies that it's been years upon years now since I saw one that really unsettled me, and honestly I was beginning to find the genre a bit stale, but this one totally got under my skin. A really good movie besides, too! Beautifully shot, neat 80s horror styled soundtrack, and packed full of homages to classic horror movies while at the same time feeling like something different and fresh. One I'll remember in the coming years alongside my absolute favourite horror movies, I think.

I don't like horror films. I think the last one I watched was like, Saw 1. It's funny, I have no problem mowing people down in GTA or hacking things to bits in DmC, but I don't like seeing actual people in pain or stress. Must be down to a sense of control. The movie will happen the way it will happen, but ignoring cutscenes I at least have some say in the virtual violence I inflict on others.

Rewatched my favorite movie earlier, Lord of War. A bit slow in places, but the cynical nihilism dripping from the script is wonderful. The main character is an amalgamation of several actual arms dealers operational from the 80's to the early 2000's, and details his rise from selling single guns in hotel rooms to selling tanks stolen from post USSR Ukraine. I can't adequately describe why I find it so appealing, seeing as how it deals with the horrible things that happens to people in warzones... Maybe the same thing that makes people slow down to look at a car accident.

Just seen Jurassic Park World, which was surprisingly good, and everything I wanted the last godzilla movie to be and wasn't. It was a little predictable but still fun.

If you liked that you're probably going to like Chappie too. I was expecting a little more Asimov but it was still good.

Somebody really liked Predator, wanted to make their own version, but couldn't get the rights, so they just jammed as many action movies cliches in as they could to try and disguise the fact that they were just making Predator.

All I see in this is a whiny political statement about racism in the LAPD and Sony trying to push their MiniDiscs, all set four years into the future at the time of the film with a flimsy science fiction framework to justify it all.

If you think that's in your face and frustrating, try Elysium.

I also watched It Follows recently, brilliant film, I normally don't enjoy horror films because they don't spook me but this was one was very entertaining, the idea behind the monster being so simple it was probably very cheap to create.

Last movie I caught was Jurassic World - kind of dumb but me my wife enjoyed it. I got to see what I didn't see in the other Jurassic movies - rampaging dinos tearing up lots of people :-D
