I didn't damage them, the wear was from normal use.
Free implies there was absolutely no cost to the recipient, had to gives you games with enough value to cover the shipping of those controllers so not quite under the "free" category.

Normal wear...uh huh...tooooootally...I believe you.It helps to wash your hands before gaming and then every half hour or so. Somewhat inconvenient but it helps to keep oils down and then the controller won't get as worn. I've never had a controller wear out, and I game a lot. My old Dualshock 3 was worn no doubt, but I wasn't going to have to quite using it anytime soon.
They were free, other stuff was shipped with it that was actually valued.

Well no shit if you are saying infinite time eventually they will break down. I don't think it's reasonable at this point for PS1 controllers to be breaking due to age.
