Apparently, at some point in the past, some idiot wired up the air handlers incorrectly. The handler is 60 amp, it was wired with 10/2 wire which only carries 20 amp, and the breaker was 40 amp. The handler developed a problem, and the breaker didn't kick out before the wires overheated. I found a smouldering mass of "oh my god" in the attic. The fire department said it was only a few minutes away from being flames. Really dodged a bullet today. Called in an electrician to redo 6 drops that all melted together and an HVAC guy to completely go through both systems. Just got home. Tired.

A similar thing happened in our house, too much power was used at once and this melted the main fuse and the wiring behind the fuse board was melting before the fuses blew, the electricians who did our house just tacked on more to over used fuses.
