I think that it's illegal here but police don't enforce it. They don't really care.

The cops here try to enforce most stuff, obviously they can't be everywhere at once and in this state there are manpower issues. Younger drivers are easily identified (L and P plates for a few years until they can get a full licence) and cops tend to concentrate on them a lot (even when I was young they did).

There's a demerit points system for violations of all sorts...do enough within a given time and your licence is suspended.

Get caught driving unlicenced (or suspended) a few times and it's prison time

Talking about licence suspension...there was a dude in town the other day walking from a car park to the gun shop with a rifle. He had the bolt removed but it wasn't in a gun case or anything

By the time he got to the gun shop, cops in flak jackets were all over him.
    Now has no gun licence

That wouldn't happen here. People can carry guns into stores, restaurants etc. It's legal, but I don't like it.

The gun laws are reasonably tough here. The only people walking around in public with firearms are cops and security.
Even if you have a licence and the gun is broken down inside a lockable case you have to use the shortest possible distance between your vehicle and the gun shop. And you have to park very close to the shop.

You can't just walk around with a gun, even if it's unloaded and the bolt is removed. Many people that know nothing about guns would see that as being threatening.

Maybe I need to go to Australia. Because that probably wouldn't happen here.

That's retarded. Goes to show you living in a fucking nanny state. When are you guys going to ban knives like the UK did?

Knives aren't banned but there are restrictions. People under 18 can't buy knives at all.
You may think it's retarded, but people are retarded. You don't need to be carrying around knives or guns without a valid reason.

Obviously the US has serious problems with certain (many) individuals having access to and carrying weapons, but many people just can't accept it.
Look at Switzerland. Nearly everybody has guns but it's rare that anything happens.

My reason to carry a knife or other weapon is to protect myself from your average random stalking scumwad criminal on the street. They won't care about the law one way or another, so I'd rather have a level playing field then be caught totally unprotected. I've been there before, and it's a horrible feeling. Even if they're all unarmed, if they get you down on the ground and start wailing and kicking you you'll probably be dead, or wish you were. Regardless of the laws restricting guns and knives. Where as if you were to have a gun in that situation you could put a few rounds in a couple of them and have them running for their lives. You don't treat animals like humans, you treat them like the animals they are.

You do realize that Switzerland has about 2.5% of the population of the US. So that alone is a ridiculous comparison. Hell the whole of Australia is only roughly about 7% of the population of the US...
