From what I've read new games will take advantage of the upgraded specs, extra buttons etc, so I'm assuming these new games wont work on the old hardware.

Oh, I do kinda want it. I wanna try Xenoblade. I think it's a good upgrade to be totally honest.

Xenoblade has amazing visuals for a wii game, seriously, the areas are HUGE and the music is top notch, wait till you hit the plains , freakin amazing.
