I like that, though, and I think a lot of other cat owners do too. I often feel like dogs are too obedient, to the point where they don't have much of a personality of their own, and are completely defined by their owner. To me, the difference between cats and dogs is the difference between a friend who actually has their own opinions, views, and personality, and a friend who just accepts your opinion as gospel fact, fawns over everything you say and do, and never questions you. The second might be more loyal, and might always act in your best interests instead of theirs, but the first is infinitely more interesting to me.

Dogs are loyal and well trained animals (bitches mostly) can sometimes be quite protective of small children.
They have distinct personalities. I've never had 2 dogs that were the same, not even from the same litter.
But cats are different too.

Domesticated animals like this recognise a leader.
In the case of cats, humans don't qualify as alphas
