Also, while I don't get annoyed with literal translations as a whole, the fansubbing community often takes it to ridiculous, nonsensical extremes. My editor actually wanted to change "Tokyo" to "Toukyou" on one project we were working on, and didn't relent until I threatened to resign over it, after which he basically implied that I was stupid for... you know... wanting to translate a city name in an English translation into its accepted English spelling. :'D Madness.

I'd be game. Honestly my only request when it comes to such things is having a very loose schedule, aka just translating stuff when we feel like it. I'm sure you're busy IRL, and I have my own personal life as well. And I dunno what we could translate. There are always VNs, of course, which are easier to do due to ITH text extraction and such. I've no idea how to extract a script from, say, a PSP title.

Games are fine, anime is fine, movies are fine... I just like translating in general~

I watched fansubbed anime once where the character said sayonara, and the English subs also said sayonara. Facepalms were had. Also, the good old example of leaving "mou" (expression of mild annoyance) in Japanese while giving it a TL note...

Btw there *is* a very short 10 minute Muramasa special that we could tackle for shits and giggles... I tried doing it myself, but some of the ye olde Japanese is fairly hard to hear over music and effects. I, however, have knowledge of Muramasa lore that could come in handy.

That sort of Japanese might be tough for me without text too, but we could try.

If people love Japanese so much that they're willing to suffer through "translations" like that (and it's not that I don't understand - I love Japanese too! ), I really feel that they should just learn the language. :'D

Haha, with due respect, many do work extremely hard. :'D Speedsubbing is probably one of the most tiring, demanding things I've ever done. Having to translate a whole episode each week in the space of about an hour and a half is unbelievably stressful. It's a translation schedule that pretty much nobody in the professional world would be working to with any sort of consistency. :'D The fact that people do it for free each week is certainly a testament to their love of their hobby.

Hi guys, interesting topic! Literal translations or whatever I should call them are the worst. I'm not the biggest fan of anime and mangas but I've watched/read fantranslated stuff every now and then. "Oni-chan" and "Translators note: Keikaku means plan" makes my blood boil. Translate probably instead of mixing words and having the end-user require a fucking dictionary!

No, my problem is more with the amount of sheer elitism in the fansubbing community.

Btw Elin if Muramasa seems too hard to hear over all the explosions and such, there's no need to force yourself. I don't want you to waste your time because of me. (I could help with some terminology and the special attacks that they shout based on my experience with the VN, but that's it. )

I've watched lots of those and still my most difficult task while watching anime was to remember all teh names in Bleach.
