You don't use a huge range of guns until later on.
That's what I meant by "gear up".
Best to stick to melee weapons with all the generic infected anyway, and save your ammo for when you really need it.

I tool advantage of several mail-in-rebates and a load of normal sales since cost was the largest factor in building my PC. I did however leave a huge margin for expansion in the future:
Two empty RAM slots
Video card is capable of crossfire
I can fit many more HDD/SSD's in the mounts
PSU can support anything I can imagine throwing at it

I couldn't be happier and many of the parts are technically last year's lot!

I was serious about what I said though, save your ammo at the start and only use gun(s) if you really need to.

But if you explore each area thoroughly before moving on to the next you should dig up some ammo, and there may even be a recipe somewhere at the start...I'm not entirely sure.
