Question 5 console race, Sony, M$, Nintendo, Valve, and the Ooya. What are your thoughts?

5 console race, Sony, M$, Nintendo, Valve, and the Ooya. What do you think about this, good or bad? Will there be too much saturation or will that be good for the industry, via quality control?

I think it will be interesting to see how this plays out. I don't see the Ooya doing to hot, due to the Steambox console, and the Steambox may also hurt M$, but then again, Microsoft also works on computers, in which steam is big on. Nintendo seems to be in their own little world, so they should be fine. They do enough innovation to set them apart from the rest, along with a ton of properties.

I am interested most in the Steambox. If Steam can connect to the Steambox and have the Steamstore (with their great deals and tons of game) it should be good, plus we could see Half-Life 3 on the Steambox too.

So what are your thoughts on 5 consoles being out at once?

Last I checked, all of those mentioned in the title are companies, not consoles, except for the Ouya.

Steambox vs Ouya will all be about DRM vs outlaw hackers running emulators on it and occasionally downloading hacks people put up on it. I think Ouya would win that war console wise, but Steam will have a lot more better games actually released for it.

DRM will also play big with the 720, because of a patent Microsoft filed that will monitor people so theyre charged for pirating things. Dont know how Sony will utilize DRM. Ive heard that both consoles want to do 3D gaming, thats a big NO from me.

Wii U, shitty name, and you need the black version if you want to have room to do anything with. Itll have the usual great Mario and Zelda games, and the virtual console is amazing and will get better. I dont like the screen controller though. Somehow I think its going to perform in the long run better than most think on message boards seem to think. Theyre getting 3rd party development support that the Wii didnt have, which is great.

I dont know if Ill get any of these consoles at this point, negative after negative, but we dont know what lies in the future. This is a very interesting generation of consoles, and itll be a cross roads for the industry in a lot of ways. Hopefully the new Xbox and PS will not be TOO expensive to develop for. If they are too expensive then Nintendo should take advantage of that and grab those possible games made from smaller developers with less to lose with trying new things.

But ultimately since the public doesnt really know what the new xbox and ps will be I cant really decide who will win.

OUYA is purposely open, allowing people to hack it. Steam has never had a problem before - they have great prices and products - besides OUYA is android based, we can assume that a Steam box will be a PC for the living room. Totally different markets.

I'm going with Sony so long as they keep the region protection off it like they did with the PSP, PS3 & the PS Vita. Hoping that Sony PS4 or whatever isn't going to be cloud based because New Zealand will have to remove data caps unless Kim Dotcom goes along with this ultra fast free broadband that would be awesome. Steambox isn't much point cause you can build you're own good gaming PC for cheap as chips nowadays so long as Windows 7 is going to still be sold. 3D gaming isn't going to be an issue with me cause I don't have a 3DTV so long as I don't have too have one.

    OOOOOOOOOOOOOYYYYYAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!

Too early to say, but if experience is anything to go by, I'll probably end up picking Sony's next gen.

And I dont know how the Steambox will really be about, but my comparison of the two relied on the download games from a server and play them from the box method of gaming.

And Nemesis, Id say the launch titles for the U is better than the launch titles for the original Wii. Besides you use a star trek meme, but we all know Nemesis wasnt a good movie.

The Ooya will not have mainstream support because of its openess which will hurt its mainstream appeal. The real money in the gaming market comes from parents buying stuff for kids. I don't see the Ooya being large in that market. I could be wrong however, and it wouldn't be the first time by a long shot.

I will probably end up buying a PS4 or whatever Sony decides to call it. I doubt I will get it at launch but I plan to get it within a year or so of launch. I am too far into the Sony universe to really want to get the next Xbox. I will also probably purchase a Wii U at some point as well. I have a Wii with a handful of games. I also know that I will be a sucker for the next big Mario/Zelda games.

Is the Steambox actually a console? I was under the impression it was just going to be a slightly more powerful HTPC with a lightweight OS and Steam integration. Like a Mac Mini.

It was Persona 4 Arena. I know because I ordered it and the EU release date kept getting postponed. In the end I said fuck it and cancelled the order, punishment for being so silly.

I would get that game but video games aren't cheap in NZ, it would probably be like $100NZD here where as it was $45NZD from an overseas shop I normally buy from but it was a US version, luckily I read the region locked bit before I bought it. Atlus said they wouldn't do that again but I suppose time will tell if they keep their word
