I think Melisandre is the most polarizing character in the later books. I didn't like her at first, but she's grown on me.

I hated her when she was first introduced.

I still don't like her, but after reading "A Dance with Dragons," she has been humanized for me.

And I agree (I mentioned this a couple of years ago here) But it seems as if he's just making things up on the spot with no real direction or endgame plan for the series. Just one long continous power struggle, without nearly enough attention to the fantasy side of things. I still like it though...
After I finished the first book, I had to change my perception of the novels before starting the second one. I had started under the impression that it was an epic fantasy series, and was left with more of an alternate reality Middle Ages political drama. Still great books, but not at all what I was expecting. I do kind of agree with brit, though, that Wheel of Time was better written and felt more involving. But the stories are so drastically different that it's not really a great comparison.

Same for me too. I should really finish the 5th book (even though I claim to have read everything so far) I made it halfway around a year ago and just got distracted with other things and never made it back.

I'm a huge fan of Wheel, definitely think it's way better. At least there's some sort of outlined goal right from the beggining and everyone knows fairly early on that Rand will at some point have to face the Dark One (well the real one anyhow ) Can't wait for the last book, should be soon. I don't know how they'll cram the ending into one book but a part of me will be glad when it's all over as it's gone on too long now. I agree it is quite different. It does have its political intrigues, hell maybe in some ways even more (depending on which book) but it's much farther reaching and much better organised with all the factions at play. We don't see any real motivation in Thrones except ruling the seven kingdoms and no motivation at all for the so called evil fantasy part.

The fantasy element is of course much higher in Wheel not to mention though that there is so many more books from that series. Even so if I were to compare just the first 5 books from wheel I would still like it better.

January 8th next year. From my understanding, Jordan left a rather detailed summary of how he envisioned the novels ending. With where "Towers of Midnight" left off, though, I can't imagine how Memory of Light is going to be able to wrap up the series. I didn't even start reading when it was first published, but even I've been waiting almost a decade to finish this. For the record: the Wheel of Time series is almost as old as I am. First book was published two years after I was born. That's just scary.

I definitely agree that I like Wheel more than I like ASOIAF. It's more along the lines of what I enjoy in a fantasy series. Especially since I've so vested in the main characters of Wheel now that I've been with them for so many novels. ASOIAF is definitely more "realistic" fantasy (main characters die, the good guys don't always win, not everyone will come out unscathed, yaddayadda), but that feels detrimental to me because I don't particularly feel invested in any of the main characters anymore -- I only feel invested in the over-arcing storyline, which isn't as enticing as wanting to see what happens to Perrin and Faile, or how Rand is going to make it through Tarmon Gai'don. I have always, and likely will always, enjoy character driven epics more than story driven ones.

I'm really into Rand right now. I kind of lost interested in Perrin and Faile, it just seemed to drag on for so long and she's kind of a bitch too. Mat and Egwene are pretty high up there for me too not to mention Moiraine. And of course who could forget Bella

I really can't wait to see what happens to the rest of the Forsaken and where Demandred has been hiding himself all this time. Everyone has their theories of course, so I hope it's something unexpected.

I'm trying to go through the series again but slowed down a bit (I'm halfway through the 4th book) maybe that's where I'm getting my Faile hate from because she was just awful to Perrin when they first head back to the Two Rivers.

    Anyway, we shall see

Perrin and Faile are my favourite characters in the entire series. I agree she was a bitch at the beginning, though. Still, I had a harder time reading through Rand's "pompous ass" phase than I did getting through the introduction to Faile. Once she is kidnapped, she basicallyy becomes my favourite character ever.

I really need to reread the series agian in anticipation for the last book. So many details that I've forgotten.

Pretty much why I'm going through again, I might not go all the way though as I don't think I'll finish before the new one comes out. I might go up to 10 as the last few are still pretty fresh in my mind. There were a lot of things that popped out at me from even just the first book but I'm having a hard time right now thinking of an example. Didn't you have your username as Perrin too for awhile back when
