because this game has no CDDA tracks (thats music tracks) you do not need the cue file or a ccd file at all, just make sure you burn the img file as a MODE2/2352 CD as a Binary image (I wouldn't know what options you have with your Linux CD/DVD burning software, but it should atlead ask you what mode needs to be set if you are not using a cue file or ccd file)
or you can use the cue file just make sure the img file listed in the cue matches the actual img file name
So if the img file is name FFVIII1.img then change the cue file to say the same
e.g. change
FILE "Final Fantasy VIII [NTSC-U] [Disc1of4] [SLUS-00892].img" BINARY
TRACK 1 MODE2/2352
INDEX 1 00:00:00
to read
FILE "FFVIII1.img" BINARY
TRACK 1 MODE2/2352
INDEX 1 00:00:00
EDIT before you go off and burn another CD you do have your PS2 display in RGB mode don't you??? Y-P-b-P-r display mode & Component Cable is not supported by PSX software even some PS2 software don't work in that mode either as I found out just today.

20 Discs later I got it lol
I burned the CUE file instead of the IMG file and it worked. Thanks
HOPEFULLY THIS POST WILL SAVE SOMEONE ELSE 20 CD's!
So:
Brasero to burn. FOR DEBIAN(terminal) apt-get install brasero
I used the CUE file. When they're 4 files(cue, ccd, img, sub), use the CUE file!
I used Memorex CD-R 700MB | 52x speed | 80 min(Since I couldn't find Vertabim). I recommend Vertabim to anyone! They are an awesome medium!!
I got the psxlauncher from here -> http://www.mediafire.com/?84u7153cw373g1p

I don't know what your problem burning ff8 was then again I use windows 7 + imgburn and burnt the img file alone to a memorex cd all 4 discs and tried them on a ps2 slim modded and they all worked flawlessly. No skips audio lags nothing.
