Why? Because Diablo originated as an RPG.
Gauntlet Legends came as a sequel (or a reboot?) to the original Gauntlet - a pure hack and slash dungeon crawler.
Hell, go play Gauntlet, it's almost exactly the same as Gauntlet Legends, showing how true to the source it really was.
Biggest reason I can't classify Gauntlet Legends as an RPG.
So it can't be considered a RPG because it originated in the arcade? I agree it's a hack n slash game, but back then there wasn't a real clear cut definition of what a RPG video game was. At least not up until console and PC gaming came about.

I think it's as close to an RPG game that could be defined as such back then. Sure it wouldn't be considered a full fledged RPG by today's standards, but it does hold some key elements of an RPG nowadays.

Do you know of Taryn? His blogs are interesting to read.
They're pretty much the only intelligent things I've read on there so far (I've only been a member for less than a week)

No i don't. I only became a member mid-summer when everyone on EP seemed to be sporting Raptr sigs. I mainly just use it to track everything, but it fails at that on secrets, even when I run the desktop app (which is supposed to solve said issue).

Nothing bad Merry, some Xbox games say "This is a secret achievement, you must unlock it to find out more about it" or something like that. Like on Shadowrun, a secret achievement is to win 10 consecutive rounds, I have that achievement but Raptr didnt track it, along with 3 others I have for that. And in my limited time on Borderlands 2, I have gotten 8 achievements, 5 of which were not tracked by Raptr.

Look him up. He writes about being a gamer in general, but does so in a humorous way

Hey, remember it's my opinion here

But yeah, the setting, the feel, and the gameplay all are like an RPG, but at the same time it was a betrayer to that feel.
1.) Not a developed story or characters, something just about every (good) RPG has.
2.) Game Play (yep, I'm nitpicking the hell out of this one)
3.) The overall focus was about teamwork and dungeon crawling, not just being a hero. A lot of dungeon crawlers has very much the same traits that defines an RPG, but it's the twist and focus is what makes them a genre all of its own.
