Definitely, though I've noticed certain patterns. Like, one of the Japanese players I met used Latin letters to write their username, but it was accompanied by this ☆ sign that oh so many Japanese people just love to use. However, I'd say most people who have English names tend to be foreigners. When I did quests with people like that and I said something in Japanese they instantly panicked and admitted they were foreigners.
Oh yeah, I'm sure there are. I was referring to my group of friends specifically, though. They've been playing all the GW2 betas and preordered their copies and everything. And with the announcement of the crackdown, we don't expect to last more than a few days.

Heh, I actually just finished the tutorial and logged off, so I haven't talked to anyone yet. If I was really worried about the ban, I'd just not respond at all. Then I'm just a dick. And even Japanese can be dicks. Most likely, I'd respond with something along the lines of "ENGLISH, MOTHERFUCKER. DO YOU SPEAK IT?"

When I played, most of the English speaking community was on Blocks 20-22 IIRC (on any ship, though the most popular ones are 2, 10 and maybe 6). Although Ship 2, the biggest "foreigner ship" was notorious for having the largest amount of retards, unpleasant folk, weeaboos and people who spam shit in the lobby instead of actually playing the game.

I've actually seen complaints about Japanese players being hostile towards westerners which surprised me because I've never encountered it during the few weeks I played. Quite the opposite actually. They were usually very happy that I was able to converse with them in their own language at least a little, while most other people just used Google Translate, which was probably not received very well.

To be honest, though, people just need to place themselves in the others' shoes. If I was playing a game on an English speaking server and hundreds of dudes came along speaking Russian or Polish or something like that in the public lobbies, I'd be frustrated as well.

As long as the campaign is ok, I don't really care.

I'm always tempted to try MMOs, but I often have to hold myself back. I know myself and how easily I can get hooked on these things. Which means said MMO becomes the only game I ever devote time to, which feels great at the time, but then I always look back on it and facepalm at how much time I've wasted.

Well I want to try an MMO and I've never played one before and I hear you can play GW2 without knowing the backstory of the first one. Hopefully my computer can run it or there is at least a free weekend so I can try it out.

Grow a humongous beard, wear a nappy and then finally notice the huge pile of rubbish next to your computer.

Ah, I see. There were already a couple of free weekends but you had to sign up for them I think. I wouldn't be surprised if there were more in the future, though.

Backstory? I played GW1 and I don't even know what it was all about. Actually, I don't know what any MMO is about, I'm just there to party up with dudes, kill chickens and boars and dance naked in the middle of the street!

(I know that sounds terrible but that's 99% of MMO players )

Damn, that's a good point, now that I think about it. We always bitched and moaned when people were talking in Spanish and Tagalog in the public chat channels in WoW. It was worst when it's people in your party and they're doing it just because they know the rest of the party can't read it.

Also, WoW's built-in language barriers. It's a cool idea, but it makes it too easy to grief your own team.

Well, it is probably a good point to start. GW2 is supposed to be really fucking good. On WoW's level in fluidity of combat, but pay-to-own. Already has an established canon/playerbase, though you won't be too far behind the curve if you're just picking it up. Other than that, I can't say. I'm probably the only person I know who isn't at all interested in playing.

Actually, this is kinda funny, but my guild leader is GW1 was so into the whole lore and backstory that he was kinda-sorta roleplaying while we were in the same party, commenting on certain quests in ye olde English and shouting war cries before battles.

Not caring about the backstory seems to be most MMO players you meet.

I hope there is a free weekend because I don't want to pay the full amount for the game just yet until I know it's worth it, a few of my friends are getting it and I've had great fun in skype calls playing starcraft & terraria.

I can't see myself getting GW 1 at this point now anyway.
