Only problem I have with the Bible is people taking it seriously and claiming it came directly from God when it was written (and translated) by the hands of Man. Humans are fallible and prone to skewing things according to their own points of view. Even if it was dictated by God, things have been added and removed and just lost in the translations. Now for the slave-owning part, I've gotten some interesting tidbits on what a slave was back then.
I would say, before Exodus, slaves were more of a indentured servant....just without the pay. It also says in the old testament that after 7 years go by and the "slave" in question wants to be free, the master would let him go.

Still not sure if that's how it went down
Plus I'm almost 100% sure that was the slave owner's backup reason for enslaving Africans in America and blah, blah, blah.

It is full of interesting stories. It's just that people keep talking about it while some of them don't actually read it from cover to cover. That happens a lot, just look at all the anti-Harry Potter people who kept claiming the books were full of Satan's words and never opened the book and saw it was just about a kid who is forced to fight off a snake-faced man while attending school.

From what I can remember, the Seventh Year freedom thing was just for Hebrew slaves owned by Hebrews.
