Captcha is used to digitise books, some words can be automatically recognised by google, however some can't so when you get two words they want you to translate one word and you verify that you're not a bot by filling in the other word, the word they know. So in short you only need to get one word correctly if you get something impossible to type or you can reload. I'm sure Captcha probably take the results of 10 people being asked rather than just one.
