Pretty much have to over here, because you need to be able to do some pathetic/useless manoeuvres on your test.

Emergency stop, reverse bay parking, 3 point turn (turn in the road as they call it now), hill start, down hill start, all fine.

But why make you parallel park? Why do I have to show you I can reverse around a left handed bend? Why can my hands not cross when I turn the steering wheel?

    Pathetic.

I can do all that shit fine by the way, I just don't see the point of it. As soon as I get my own car I'll be using hand over hand, driving with one hand on the wheel and the other on the gear stick for faster gear changes. Who needs 2 hands on the wheel? Not me.

Do you HAVE to take test in a 5-speed?

Can do it in whatever you like, but if you book the automatic test and get an automatic license, it only counts as a provisional license in a manual car.

Yes. Because we all know those who drive automatics possess a vagina.

The test centres recommend at least 20 hours with an instructor before you take your test.

It isn't worth learning to drive from someone that drives properly, you'll pick up too many bad habits. Might as well learn how to drive "their way" from an instructor. Then drive "your way"/"the proper way" once you have passed your test.

Well, yeah. Anything else would be just plain stoopid
Just because you can drive an automatic it doesn't mean you can drive a manual vehicle.
