Near sucked, the whole first season was dedicated to making L and Light seem like unique geniuses fighting each other for superiority, then they bring in Near and Mello in the second! Disgrace!

Near still sucked. The reason why Near and Mello are disliked is because they're splits of L, at least on the surface anyway. Not only was L killed off and thus pretty much ended the first "season" (manga and anime), but his successors were regarded as flawed clones trying to reignite the conflict of the first set. I personally would had loved to see the police task force take down Kira without super genius kids after L died.
