    if you have access to another PC, get puppy linux on a flashdrive so you can access the data you need.

    I just swapped an HDD from one Desktop to another and Windows 98 has protection against it booting. I get to the Windows logo and then a protection warning.
    Anyhow, it wcould be an OEM install or just a Win98 thing, but it backs up my argument. I am still not saying that it will not work for you.
