The hardest part is getting your foot in the door the first time. I lucked out and had an 'in' from my parents both working at the college and knowing the people who work in the department both professionally and personally. That is not what caused me to get the job. It helped get my foot in the door, but I had to jump through a couple hoops (figuratively) to get hired in the first place. Everything else after that was entirely me.
