If you leave it on the start screen long enough it changes to something better. I attempted to find a Youtube video of the start screen, but didn't come across one. It was kind of jarring when it started.
Although I was treated to a lovely notice about three DLC packs available for purchase when I started up. One of them was straight up accessories, one of them is part one of a ten part quest being gradually released every week for the next two months, and one of them was for a stronger pawn.

I wonder too. The shortest part of mine is chin length and the longest is slightly past my shoulder blades at the minute.

Gotta admit, I'm really enjoying Dragon's Dogma right now.
Of course I'm only a couple hours into it and have only made it to the second village. But still!! Enjoyment.
