bit upset to find that the vintage lawnmower I'm fixing up needs a piston and rings, at some point its ceased so someones gone at it with a screwdriver and hammer down the spark plug hole in an attempt to fix it, cracking the top ring and damaging the piston

Why would someone hammer on a piston through the spark plug hole!?

to free up the piston if its jammed or rusted in place which is common on engines that have been left sitting for years, it takes alot of pactice to do it right through. normally one would pour some light machine oil or crc down the spark plug hole and leave it to soak for a few days and then gently tap the piston with a wooden dowel and rubber or lead hammer to try and free it. in this case someones got a screwdriver a hammer and gone at it untill it broke free which is really bad as this can break rings and in some cases end with a screwdriver through the top of the piston

I would never hammer on the piston with anything. The force you apply isn't anywhere near enough to turn the rest of the engine. Soak the piston rings using the method you noted, but turn the crank instead. You can gain the mechanical advantage that way

That would work best on an complete engine imo but the tapping the piston is ideal for removing stuck piston when everything's apart also your method might not work if several pistons are stuck, you would then have to remove the crankshaft and start tapping

I used it on an old 67 Mustang I bought years ago. The car had been sitting for years, and the pistons were stuck. I soaked them all for about 3 days, and charged the battery. It took a while, but bumping the starter broke everything free after a while

Yeah, if it's disassembled, I suppose proper tapping would work.
