I know what you mean and you are right, but it would benefit them all. And it's not that I say it, some UK retailers have already offered it if that means saying goodbye to online passes.

Yep, this is actually a pretty big reason why they shouldn't do this. Cutting out a chunk of your console sales potential is a bad idea.
I mainly buy new for the new consoles to show my undying support for companies that I like but that's really not the point. The negative impact here is much greater. In addition to the above point of people not having the internet there would be plenty of people that buy new games that would not get the new system out of principle. Now sure this number may not be that big but if Micro$oft doesn't impose the same kind of system I think it would be a massive PR boom for them.
Why should they get royalties on a game more than once? You don't see car companies and house developers complaining about the used market. Moreover look at books. Used bookstores have forever been a problem for that industry. These companies/people have accepted the fact that there will be a used market.
Game companies want to create a monopoly where games are $60 new and two years later they are still $50 because nobody can sell used copies. Sure this would be ideal for them, but in the end it would greatly cut into their profits because I think they overestimate the amount of people willing to buy games at that price range. And if you can't afford the games you don't even buy the console to begin with...

That reminds me, if true, both $ony & M$ do this; Gamestop makes like 80% of their profits from used games. This would kill them. Even if they took new games and slapped a used sticker on it, they really won't be able to sell it. As far as I know, Gamestop is the only specialty store that sells video games. Target, best Buy, ect, all seem to have shit selections. I think this would really hurt GS if true.
Both companies are bushing more and more onto online purcahses. They have things like Direct2Drive already (idk about sony but microsoft does) . And Microsoft has a account where they sell everything on amazon and ebay. So its highley likely gamestop losing buisness could help them. But would also hurt losing people who have no internet connection options.
I wouldn't cry for Gamestop but this would definitely hurt all the local businesses that sell used games in addition to other things.
It's not the most viable solution when it comes to the US. Internet coverage is spotty at best.
"Gamers will be free to trade in Orbis games, but the person who purchases a second-hand disc will be restricted to a limited trial mode or "some other form of content restriction." These gamers will be forced to pay a fee to unlock the full title, according to the source."
i may be mistaken but is it me or does that sound a bit like a anticounterfeit method? essentially blocking copied games in general. (like roms)
well, its not like i was planning on getting any new console(s) anyway, as with my disliking of newer games so too is my interest in buying them fading :/ if the next gen proves to be this limiting on people then i'll go from 2-4 purchases (like last year) to 0 overall and just stick to roms and emulators entirely... or MMOs

I can ONLY see this working IF they put every game for the system up for download and reduce the cost as the game ages. The primary reasons as to why people buy used is because they CAN'T get the game new after a certain period of time and because of cost. Offering EVERYTHING for download would solve one problem, and reducing cost would solve the other.
Of course, this is all too common sense for them, so screw you people who want to play older games; just buy the latest crap for 60+ USD (even though most modern games aren't worth half that given how little content we get anymore) and never dare dream of playing anything more than a few months old.
