People told me Spanish was "easy" and I was having one hell of a time with it during highschool. Mostly because I don't like the language at all. Not the grammar, or the way it sounds, or anything. I had zero motivation, obviously.

I hated Spanish during grade school.
So glad I changed to French.
Although, I think going with Chinese might help with Kanji in Jap

Yeah, if you already know Chinese. But if you want to study Japanese, just study Japanese.

Kinda sorta. Chinese Simplified, Kanji, and Hanja all took different paths from Chinese Traditional. It can help due to some similarity owing to their common origins, but learning modern Chinese will teach you Simplified, which will tend to vary from Kanji in all but the most simple ways. It's a bit like how French speakers typically find learning Spanish and Italian easier than Russian or Xhosa.

Pretty true, I communicate with my Italian friends simply because I know Spanish. Enough of the words are similar enough to be able to put the pieces together.

Similarly, people say Japanese is one of the hardest languages in the world, but I've had the least trouble with it out of any of the languages I've studied because of how motivated I was. I'm sure there are languages that are, objectively speaking, more or less complex than others, but mostly it's just a question of being willing to put in the hours.
