I will be choosing a second-hand system, but hardly used. In case of any technical shortfalls, I have a small crew of guys and gals that do my repair stuff for me, locally...
(You know what I mean, you always hear the stories of the 'ring of death', and used systems having issues that cause them to lock-up and whatnot...making sure that these things DONT happen to us..)

What IS the deal with these recent failings, anyhow? We have several PS2s, and the one that we use most, a 'Fat' model that looks like it has lived through WWIII, is absolutely DIEhard; I swear, this thing has taken more abuse than Lindsay Lohan at a meth orgy.

Wonder why the newer consoles seem far more frail than those of past generations? I bet it has something to do with A.) declining standards for manufacturing, and B.) these systems relying heavily on internet usage. I have never once played an 'on-line' game via a video game system, and I dont believe that I ever would..

    Thanks again!

If you want a backwards compatible PS3, I'd recommend a launch 60gb. However, those don't come cheap. Big difference is the launch 60gb has actual hardware backwards compatibility (BC) instead of the later software BC in the 80gb BC ps3s. This means that some (only a few, really) games don't work quite as well on the 80gb BC ps3. To be honest though, I'd rather buy a slim ps3 and just keep my ps2 hooked up, it's cheaper, and if my ps3 dies, I still can play ps2 games.

As for ps3s dying, it's because of the inefficient cooling of the systems and the thermal paste degrading. I still have my launch 60gb and I haven't had any problems with it.

VERY informative, thanks so much, Batt! What if I could get a nice 'Launch 60GB' for $100, give or take? We both really dislike having multiple systems hooked-in...too messy. (This is why my NES and SNES systems sleep in storage; we have one of those pirate decks that plays NES and SNES carts....it was only $20 at the flea.....)

I have been compiling a master list of PS3 games based solely on the opinions of folks' here. Even if a given game doesnt float my boat, its no sweat - 95% of the local shops will let me do a swap-out, I'm in good with these kids...

    Thanks again!

if it works and plays psx, ps2, ps3, dvds and blus, I'd say that's a steal. It goes for 3-5 times that on ebay. You can also swap out the HD for a laptop HD if you need more storage.

As for games, I'd say just keep trying some until you find what you like. The PS3 definitely has some great exclusives in its library.

    can't see the pic.

As for the ps3, yeah it's about that, considering that a new slim one is about 300 already.
Batman AA and Arkham City are both on the ps3. Man, I can't believe I forgot to recommend them to you.

    Ah, I see!

Cant see the pic, eh? Hmmm...shows-up just fine over here....I always use the 'website/forums' option over at Photobucket, though I really know nothing about 'formats' or anything like this...
They give you several 'link' options, like 'e-mail', 'jpeg', etc....I have NO clue, sadly..

My wife manages a local retail store, and there are 'kick-backs', to say the least...
Seriously, one year she and another lady ended up with several CASES of chocolate rabbits, as well as a sealed case of a 'Stride' gum flavor that didnt sell well....heh....we were giving away sweets for months...
