From what I read, that's their reasoning. End it without it dragging on and going stale. However I wouldn't be surprised to see a 6th season, it's been a great money-maker for AMC.

I sorta would be.

There's not much further they can really take the premise. It started to wear thin by the end of season 2/early season 3. It only maintained quality by shoving in a good antagonist and some whacky road runner-esque hijinks through season 4. They're already playing around with murder and potential child killing. Where exactly does one escalate from there?

They took away aforementioned great antagonist and the other major one is likely to be "put on a bus". The cartels have been thoroughly dealt with, so it's fairly unlikely we'll see much outta them unless they try to whip out Gus' family as one final antagonistic force..

Between all that, I don't really see where they can take this. About the only major thing left as I see it is for Jesse to realize how much of a monster Walt has become and subsequently kill/stop the monster he helped create several seasons ago. With possible subplots involving the family finding out more about the scope of what he's really been up to. Since he effectively confessed to multiple homicide with that little "I won" remark. . But that's just me.

In all honesty they probably could have ended the series with season 4. Things are fairly wrapped up (to a point) With Walts "I won" The 5th season is supposed to be longer than any of the others at 16 episodes so they'll have time I guess to really finish it off. I was just saying not surprised if they tried because well money money money ya know. Still there is a fair bit they could do

Walt and Jesse could go back into business for themselves. Bring Skylar into the fold lol, make it a family business. Also maybe having Hank continue and finding out about Walt which could lead to some nasty confrontations there. But yeah Walt's gone over the edge I don't think he could ever go back to a normal life now. You have a point with Jesse, if he ever found out about some of the things Walt has done to him that would be it. The only way I could see it end is with Walt dead or in prison

Word is, that was the intent. That episode was almost complete before they were renewed. So it mostly heads in a direction of finality.

I can see them doing a lot of that next season. But season 5 is going to be 50% longer. So it's a season and a half, really. Loads of time to run through the motions of wrapping up the remaining threads and putting in a little bit of additional stuff. Possibly some moral choice coming up with Hank being too smart for his own good and the question of what to do about it coming up.

I can really see them going with the Walt being dead angle. This whole thing started with Walt finding out he was dying. The series ending with him finally keeling over would fit fairly well. The writers love to foreshadow and have things "match up" to earlier bits. It's back to just the two of them, Walt's coughing heavily, back with his family, Jesse is now with a girl again and back on the drugs, and they just took out a major crime boss. Who, surprise, is connected to wheelchair guy. It's early season 2/late season 1 in reverse. They even ended it with an explosion (Late season 2), and a half charred face (season 2 opening). About the only thing it's missing is the trailer.
