From what I read, that's their reasoning. End it without it dragging on and going stale. However I wouldn't be surprised to see a 6th season, it's been a great money-maker for AMC.

A main character yes, according to the wiki he becomes an MC in like the 8th season. From what I remember for the beginning of his run he didn't have much screen time and usually involved him just bitching out Mulder and stuff.

Didn't like her much myself, and seems not to resonate much with fans either. I remember hearing that they were thinking of using her as a possible love interest for Picard. Glad it didn't happen and Gates came back
