Source - Gun and slogan start war
Seriously? How can anyone fail to see that is racist as hell?
A WAR of words has broken out in Maleny over the slogan "bring on the towel heads", which was written on a gun in public view opposite the Maleny State High School.
Landowner Ross Hopper said he had received "more compliments than complaints" about the gun, which has been there for about five years.
But Colin Peters, who regularly walks past the site, said he found the words "disturbing" and "in your face".
"It's got 'beware of the towel heads' highly visible from the road ... the gun barrel is also visible from the school," Mr Peters said.
"I would say it's been on there since the gun was wherever it served during the war. But why store it where it's highly visible and kids going to the high school can see it?
"I know it was a sentiment expressed in war, but I don't think it's appropriate in this day and age."
School principal Brian King said while the words were "probably not appropriate", his students were educated to be "tolerant and understanding" of the context in which they were written.
Mr Hopper said the gun, mounted on the back of a ute, would stay where it was.
"People are just getting too politically correct these days," he said.
"We've had more compliments on it - and it's won several ute competitions before."
Mr Hopper said the issue was about "freedom of speech" and the gun would not be moved.
"There are too many people who bring their rules over here and tell us what we can and can't say," he said.
"People are saying don't upset the Muslims, don't do this, don't do that ... how people take it is up to them."
There is much associated with war that involves racism, but people tend to make excuses for it 'cos soldiers are patriots, ya know what I mean?"I know it was a sentiment expressed in war, but I don't think it's appropriate in this day and age."
Ever heard of human skulls being kept as war trophies? It's not something that only happened in ancient history.
My personal opinion is that anything related to war, and kept as a reminder of war is ok in the condition it was when in use.
But having this particular item in the location it's in, and the fact the guy is going on about "freedom of speech" (which has nothing to do with the reason I'm giving for such an item being allowed to exist) is pretty inappropriate.
It really should be in a war memorial or museum, with a notice about the reason the message is there.
Lots of stuff has been destroyed in the past simply because some people decided it was "a bad thing" to keep such stuff around.
But it's all about the history of war and prejudice imo........shouldn't be destroyed but preserved in the correct context.
