Default Does anyone else miss the "old" Nintendo/Rareware times?

I was wondering if I'm the only one who thinks the best times as a Nintendo gamer were in the '90s.
I mean, even though the Wii isn't obviously a commercial failure,I've noticed that it rather focused more on the new controls scheme and the casual market than at making real "old school" games, having even what many people consider as "shovelwares".I'm nothing next to the bright minds that run Nintendo, but unfortunately it seems they've relied too much on the "triforce" mario/zelda/metroid franchises, instead of developing some new IPs as Sony has been doing through the PS3/PS2 lifespan. It doesn't mean it's always bad,Nintendo will always make quality titles and I respect them, but lately even their first/second parties titles don't have to much appeal as it had in SNES and N64 days, like Super Mario World or Donkey Kong Country trilogy. To be honest,IMHO the best '90s Nintendo console titles weren't made by Nintendo itself, but by Rare, like Goldeneye 007,Perfect Dark,Donkey Country 64,Banjo series,Conker's Bad Fur Day and Battletoads(obviously Nintendo R&D made wonders like Ocarina of Time,Majora's Mask and Mario 64,but I just can't like them as much as I like Rare).I quit buying/playing new Nintendo games in this decade after the N64 dismissal(not that Nintendo will be worried about losing a single customer),which somehow concurred with Rareware acquisition by Micro$oft. So it's somehow a kind of a poll:as a traditional gamer,do you feel that current Nintendo first/second party games don't attract you as it did before Gamecube/Wii age, especially the latter? Please note that I never said that Nintendo sucks or that console x or y is better or worse than current Nintendo line of consoles.

Not sure. I do but I don't however I do feel Microsoft is misusing Rareware as a developer (much like Nintendo did). Rare has the potential (as well as a lot of buried IP) to create some fantastic games for Microsoft and the only thing that they are being utilized for is to build these stupid (IMO) Kinect games. They have franchises like Banjo-Kazooie, Killer Instinct, hell even Jet Pac and RC Pro AM that were really great in those days that could be looking for either a reboot or a new game entirely. If you remember correctly the only game that Rare made for the Gamecube was Star Fox Adventures (which heavily saddened me). Microsoft potentially has one of the best companies out there for building video games and they're letting them crumble to the ground.

I miss Rare on Nintendo, but Nintendo has other great third party developers. I think Capcom made a great job with Resident Evil series (when they were exclusive). But I really don't know, right now maybe, they are relying too much on their own games. Like, remaking old games for their 3DS, I don't think this is a good idea. Games are entering the 3D era and all, but we want to see new things using this technology, and I know that it's nice to see the old things get revamped sometimes, but it was always the new that kept Nintendo going.

Most of the Rare staff who worked with Nintendo in '90s aren't there anymore,so I don't mind whether they get back or not to Nintendo.Another issue is that Nintendo seem to be recycling the same franchises again and again.I have done some kind of research and I really couldn't see anything substantially "new",just a bunch of remakes, adding "3D" or "Wii" in the ending.Even the few franchises I enjoyed on Gamecube like Resident Evil didn't repeat it greatness on Wii,because I don't think rail shooters are something which fit with RE storyline. They weren't even really new plots, just a type of recap of previous RE titles.I recall a time when I was a kid and I had the $$$ to buy a PSX and many games for it,but instead I bought a SNES and a few N64 cartridges(I shared the expense with a friend who had a N64)just because liked Rare and Nintendo at the time. However I hope that Nintendo will do a great job with 3DS and Wii U and offer us good (and new) games/franchises.

Personally to me the greatest thing Microcash can do with this company is allow them to do what made them great. Complete (or at least close to it) freedom on the games they build.

I think the point of this thread is this, wouldn't it be nice if Rare would start making good games again, personally I think Nintendo is doing alright, but who wouldn't want to see a new Killer Instinct?

I would love a new Killer Instinct!

I think as others have stated Microsoft bought a lot of IP's that were succesful and never built on them. Goldeneye inspired every FPS after it yet couldn't shift a proper sequel. Microsoft could be banging out sequels to of Banjo, Perfect Dark , Killer instinct etc instead of Kinect games. Shows the sorry state of the game market where casual shovelware outsells genuinly great games

Yeah, you got the idea.As I don't like Nintendo first-party franchises(except for three or four mario games),I would seek Rare, but sometimes I forget that Nintendo sold them to M$ and the latter designed them to make a bunch of stupid Kinect games.

Yes quite, I do feel however that Microsoft isn't using either of those. They bought this company along with the IP from said company and aren't using it whatsoever. Hell even a Banjo-Kazooie 3 that isn't Nuts & Bolts style on XBLA would be awesome (I personally enjoyed Nuts & Bolts though).

Rare isn't the same as it used to be. Any of you guys play Perfect Dark Zero? That game was terrible.
