Although as a bit of an example, I'm currently living off approximately 12K a year, with my expenses coming in at somewhere around 11K. Which means that even if I can only find a McJob I'd have roughly 9K extra, although that is before calculating in the additions of taxes and such.

You could probably find a decent used car and cheap driving lessons on that if you don't go too crazy with extra spending. And he doesn't have anywhere near the expenses I do.

But depending on the cost of living and cost of essentials (food, heating, etc), then it could be freaking fantastic. I'm not bashing it as a total income. However, with a direct conversion to CAD, I wouldn't be able to afford a car and driving lessons on that.

However, if minimum wage in the UK is, say, £8000, then yeah, that's fantastic.
Never working retail or a call centre type job EVER FUCKING AGAIN.
I know of one person in a call centre that earns alright, but they have an assload of work to do, construction is where its at.

Yeah my body hurts after a hard days work, and yeah the hours are long, but the plus side the slow days we muck around something shocking, started a rugby match the other day before lunch, then started a cricket match after lunch.
Wasnt our fault the lead design team cant fucking work out where the fuck the roads meant to go.

I remember pulling the same hours in retail and getting a "promotion" and earning an extra $1 an hour, for fuckloads more work, more work = more stress, more stress = unhappy.

Debt up to my eye balls, would have to pick and choose or plan ahead to buy a "impulse" item. The other day i just turned around and brought a PS3, retail i would of had to wait a month atleast to say up that sorta cash and hope to fucking god no retard bills came through...

    So, yeah.
Yeah, depends on the province that you live in. BC has had the lowest minimum wage (and I'm pretty sure two of the most expensive cities to live in in the country -- Vancouver and Victoria) for a long time now. We were at $8 for the last six years or so, and just a couple of months ago they finally raised it to $8.75 -- which is still five cents an hour lower than the next lowest province, Alberta, who has had a minimum wage of $8.80 since 2009. Newfoundland and Ontario have two of the highest.

Our minimum wage was 8 dollars. Like 2 years ago.

    We're up to 10 now.

But before it comes up, let me cite a little bit of basic economics:

High minimum wage = fewer employees
    Fewer employees = fewer jobs

And as such, even getting a minimum wage job isn't easy. Getting a good one? Now that's a toughie.

Also, Alberta doesn't pay HST/PST, just the 5% GST.

    So fuck them.

And getting a full time job? Even harder. (If it's anything like BC).

I know people who are working three part time jobs and still can't get enough work to make a 40 hour work week.

Attempt to kill large spider on my bedroom wall. Spider evades death and falls down behind my TV unit. Pull out TV unit, spider is nowhere to be seen. No sleep for me tonight!

Just as hard if not harder. Part time employment EVERYWHERE. And a lot of places treat their part timers like full timers. IE working you to death.

Which is why so many people here are either unemployed or eventually had to pick up and move to another province.

Pretty much universally to a province with a lower minimum wage.

    Fun times.

Living in a predominantly rural area with an economy mostly based on tourism means long term jobs here are hard to come by, and when you do, the wages are some of the lowest in the country. I'm currently trying to find something that'll last me until spring but it's tough. I'm seriously this close to applying at McDonalds.
