    You could try and get the hard drive out of the shell and attempt to recover some of the files?

    That's my plan. It's a Seagate Freeagent, which I think is relatively easy to open. I'll save my freaking out until I'm sure whether I can get anything back or not. I don't feel like messing with it right now.

    Your best bet for recovering files is to use one of the recovery programs you can run as a boot disc.

    It's more than likely the power adapter or some of the onboard controllers. I seriously doubt the actual hard drive just died without a sound.
