    Also: claustrophobia. You're under tons of ice in an abandoned complex vs. some castle in the hills. Hell, you can even look out the windows and see a lovely forest.

    That too. The more helpless your situation, the better when it comes to horror. Makes you wonder why there aren't more horror movies set on subs or on crippled spaceships. Truly a situation where you're fucked if things start to go very wrong.

    And then there's the overall weirdness of Penumbra.

    How much of it REALLY happened? Was there more to what was happening than we really saw? Can we really rely on the narration? Fake outs and fridge logic like that can really add to things. Especially if it can have consequences for the ending.
