I've now beaten the game and I'm happy with the final product. It's a solid game despite the somewhat unpolished surface. Enemies, weapons, bosses, Duke's one-liners and the occasional setpieces are always fun. Finding ways to boost Duke's ego is great fun too.
The game has its fair share of issues although it deserves better scores than it's getting. I mean the latest Brofist of Duty: Modern Company 5 always gets great-to-awesome reviews despite the linearity, QTE and other gameplay moments that DNF gets flacked for. It's kinda strange. The regenerating health shouldn't have been there though. The game isn't built for the duck-and-cover gameplay that such a health system forces upon the player and thus some battles are really frustrating.
Hopefully after acquiring the rights to the franchise Gearbox can make the next Duke game, with the feedback they get from this game, in shorter time and on a more up-to-date engine. And as far, far, far, far, far away from George Broussard as possible.
