I have the PS3 version, which came with the Cerberus Network. This included a little bit of backstory by Dark Horse Comics that allows you to catch up on the previous game's events and make some major choices as if you had made them in a previous play through of the first game.

There's really nothing complex to understand about the whole story, anyway.
