As you get more rep, the pips will go up.
Once you reach the maximum number of pips (which is five gold pips, by the looks of it), you will be given a bronze medallion and the pips will reset.
Once you get the maximum number of pips again, you will receive a second bronze medallion. Repeat.
Once you get five bronze medallions, you will get one silver medallion. Repeat.
Once you get five silver medallions, you will get one gold medallion. Repeat.
