I was tempted to buy an album I wanted from iTunes because I couldn't find it anywhere to download.

But then I got bored of happy hardcore, so all's well.

You are aware there are plenty of free programs you can use to pull things off it, right? iPhoneBrowser, for example. The only problem is that you won't be able to tell what the songs are till after you've pulled them off. The iPod sets the filenames to random 4 character strings, but the ID3 tags are still intact.

For Windows, yes. Mac, no. I could have done it through Bootcamp but then I'd have to transfer it all to an external drive to copy it back to the hard drive under OS X, and again, that's more effort than £6 through Paypal.
