To be honest, I was avoiding watching subbed stuff for a long time as well, but then I finally decided to go for it with High School of the Dead, and it opened up so many doors. And filled up my hard drive. :'(

If you hadn't said no subbed, I'd totally say TANTEI OPERA MILKY HOLMES. It has "tantei" and "Holmes" in the title. Clearly, it shall be a fantastic detective series. But it's also about little girls, so maybe not.



There are a lot of series where the English dub is better than the Japanese. And dubs have been getting progressively better since the 90s. Aside from porn, almost everything dubbed in the past 5 years has been really high quality.

Dubs have been fine, always, they were a little rocky in the early 90s for shows; movies have always been at a higher standard. Since 95 and beyond dubs for shows have been good, if not great. I didn't like Death Note when I tried watching it .

Plus, once I associate a character with a specific JP voice actor, for me it's hard to switch over.

What really bothers me, though, is when I recognize an English voice actor's voice. For example, Johnny Yong Bosch is in EVERYTHING. But at least he uses a different voice for Lelouch Lamperouge and Renton Thurston.

Also, when they use the same person for a major character, and then umpteen extras in the same series. For example, Teletha Testarossa in Full Metal Panic is reused as an extra in that one episode with the briefcase full of PVC figures of magical girls.

The talent pool is still pretty small, it might expand if people didn't make wild claims of 'terrible' dubbing. Is Grenadier any good, I've been thinking about watching it? Lucky Star is a bad show.

I missed this part. Give the manga a try as well. The artist usually draws H-manga (HOTD is actually his first non-hentai work as far as I know), so he's pretty good at this shit. And because it continues the story from where the show ends, duh.

If you're looking for a mindless action anime with really good animation/fight scenes (same people as the Hellsing Ultimate OVA) and a generous amount of T&A fanservice (which is sometimes even more over-the-top than in the manga), you'll probably have fun. It's not trying to be anything more, though, so if you want deep characters and plot, look elsewhere.

I prefer English dubbing because it's actually pretty impressive for the most part nowadays. Funi really stepped up their game, almost completely different from what they were back in 2005. I can watch stuff subbed no problem, I just like hearing the English VAs I know and like the voices of, plus I don't know much of the Japanese language so I can't tell when they're impressive or not beyond really emotional scenes. Anyone who actively hates of dubs nowadays probably hasn't heard a dub in years. I don't mind if someone prefers subtitles to new dubbing, but that doesn't instantly make all dub work horrible. There are actually a few series that I would say have better English dubs than the original Japanese audio (Baccano is just amazing).

On dubs vs subs, I'm a sub guy. When I watched anime on tv, it was always subbed, so I'm far more comfy with Jap voices with my anime than American/what-dub-have-you. Everyone has their own preference, no sense bashing on about it.

On topic, The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya is kinda old (and still waiting for S3), but really awesome. It's fun, random, and deep, in a way. Do give it a spin.
