OK lets see, where to start?
PSOne on the PS3:
Any ps3 can play psone discs, no emulation required. It is natively supported.
PS2 on the PS3:
Up to and including the 60gb models had the emotion engine in them, aka the main ps2 hardware alongside the ps3 innards. They play ps2 games with no emulation, with full compatibility and speed. The 80 gb model removed the emotion engine (due to costs), but tried to extend backwards compatibility with an emulator, but it was buggy and eventually removed.
PSOne on the PSP:
Not natively supported, but the PSN offers some titles converted for download, and all the CFW available for the psp have POPS built in, which stands for PlastationOnPspS, which is an excellent emulator, though t requires a conversion to eboot
NGP hardware:
The Xperia Play benchmarks roughly equate that of the iphone 4, and as youll notice, the only games being released for it are PSOne games and PSP adaptations. If the NGP ships with all that sony is claiming, it will have about 4/5ths the processing power in raw gigflops as the ps3, or roughly 3x that of the xbox 360, and will output on a screen 4/5ths the resolution of 1080p, though they are discussing full hd output via hdmi. That is of course, based on the specs they have released, and all that is subject to change by ship date.
Emulation on a gaming machine doesnt require as much power as on a pc. this is bc 100% of the consoles power can be given to the emulator, whereas in a pc, the os must be running in the background, along with a hundred other processor and memory demanding things. The ngp should be capable of running all ps2 games at full speed, but it is doubtful sony would release an emulator, since it would inherently mean youd have to have a backup of your ps2 disc, and in sony's eyes that makes you automatically a pirate. More likely is that they will release ps2 titles as psn downloads, making you pay for them again.
Regardless, it should only take a few weeks to figure out an efficient emulator for the ps2 on this device, and thats assuming it takes a whole week to hack it ;p
OK trolls, sorry to interupt your bickering about some future toy with reason, please continue
I just know I'm buying one.
I don't give a fuck, Sony can have my moneys.
I'm excited about MT Framework Mobile.
Just gimme a portable MVC3 and all is right with the world.![]()
I may be stating the obvious, but everyone knows that the xperia play and the NGP are 2 separate devices right? Some of the posts seem to refer to them as having the same hardware which isnt true in the slightest. The NGP being a dedicated gaming console and the Xperia is obviously a smartphone.
Anyway, i also plan on buying this on release. I dont care if i have to pay a premium. The touch control on the back interests me aswell, seems a genius way to do things. Especially for us men with big fingers that get in the way of the standard touchscreen which really annoys me when playing games.

A slightly off-topic piece of information i just stumbled on, Sony plan on releasing a Playstation Tablet that could arrive as early as this summer. Here's the quote.
According to Japan’s Nikkei, Sony’s CEO, Sir Howard Stringer let it slip that it’s preparing an Android 3.0 tablet – due to arrive by the end of summer. Engadget’s putting the pieces of the puzzle together and figures that the tablet, which could very much be the Sony S1 tablet we previously heard of will likely be a PlayStation Certified device. Detailed at the unveil for the NGP back in January, Sony stated that it was no longer limiting its PlayStation brand and library of games to its own PlayStation devices. Instead, Android devices that meet a certain specification can be “certified” to run PlayStation games. Unlike its competitors, Sony has yet to release a single tablet. In fact, it is the only major electronics giant that hasn’t released its tablet plans yet. In a sea of generic Android-powered tablets, equipping a tablet with the PlayStation brand might be a strategic move that helps Sony differentiate its tablet and give it a fighting chance to compete head to head with Apple’s mighty iPad 2. Let’s just hope Sony’s tablet will at least start at $499 and not a penny more.
Recreational drugs?equipping a tablet with the PlayStation brand
Spoiler warning:
Its possible they said that the NGP has the same Graphics as the ps3 that's what i heard
It would be nice to play Dark Cloud on a portable. But that's just me.
I'm just glad it's not completely touch based.
Trying to play SF4 on an ipod touch is a bitch to say the least.
Able to play PS2 games...well hell from all the showcases with the NGP they were bragging that they can port PS3 games on it so why not games that are a gen behind it. Besides even if it is not a direct port without any graphical changes it seems possible to pull off PS2 with minimal changes I mean we have come a long way in gaming tech. Oh my! Just the thought of playing games like a ffx portable has got me excited.
On a side note I do hope this super awesome, totally hyped up, highly expected to be the greatest thing since slice bread of a handheld gaming machine becomes a huge success for Sony to redeem itself. We may have to wait as long as into the next year to know the conclusion to that story though.
My powerful gaming PC can't even emulate PS2 games that I have on my discs. I'm not entirely sure that the new NGP can... If it does/will, then I'll consider investing in it.
