For me, Doom 3 wasn´t scary or horror at all, maybe the first steps after the gates to hell where opened, but after 2 Minutes you realized that you just need to do a sidestep every time you open a door so the imp couldnt hit you. That´s also the reason why I can´t say that F.E.A.R. is scary, cause it was repetitive, you had 1 or 2 rooms fighting enemys (what stills makes a lot of fun), and then the game trys to scare you, problem is: before nearly every "scary" part, there is a autosave checkpoint.
I started to play Dead Space, the first one, last night, seems to be a good entry.
silent hill 2,3, and homecoming
resident evil 1 - 5
siren blood curse!!
if you havent done it and youre a horror fan i cant recommend it enough. absolutely terrifying
oooo and jericho. i really liked that game a lot
im a big horror game fan
there isn't a lot to choose from, we really need more from this genre... but i'm going with Silent Hill. when i was younger, these games actually managed to SCARE me and that's what a horror game needs to do. they're also awesome in many other ways such as storyline, soundtrack, atmosphere, exploration, etc.
(though the game "The Ring: Terror's Realm" scared me too... not sure why and i never bothered to finish it, constantly got stuck on "what to do next?")
EDIT: wait, let's not forget Condemned! that game was awesome.
Dead Space
The original Fatal Frame. Playing this by myself in a dark room allways gives me the creeps. Even after knowing when and where the ghosts are located there is still an anticipation factor when your like me, and getting the perfect snapshot is critical. I had a tendancy to restart the game if I didn't get a near perfect shot which tends to add to the aww shit factor.
Try to appreciate those who live during your own life time, because we'll all be dead soon enough.
Evil Dead
Resident Evil
Dememtium ward
Devil May Cry 1+2+3...
these games give me sorta creep and worst when u playing alone on midnight..
but honestly,
when mentioned zombie or ghost things, there always be hot chicks with sexy outfit to be play with..
that why i LOVE HORROR GAMES
While perhaps not technically "horror", i'd have to say System Shock 2! I mean, it really, really scared me. Yet I kept coming back each night, lights out, headphones on and volume up It also deserves an award for "Best Game No-one Played".
Not like its overrated POS "spiritual successor" BioShock... ugh. How can a game be scary when you can just run & gun your way through it? Basically, just what Soonjai said about Doom 3.
I hate games that *try* to scare you. "Oh, let's turn the lights out! Maybe throw a monster or two at you, muhaha!"
Sure, it makes you jump, but is it scary? Hell no.
Its all about the atmosphere. That's why Silent Hill + SS2 win in my books
