I think really that it's more of a "grown apart" thing with marriages and the older women.

As opposed to, say, Puni Poemi where the resemblance was just for a few cheap gags near the start.

I disagree. For all its grimdark edging, it's still telling the archetypal Maho Shojo story with the archetypal themes.

As opposed to, say, Puni Poemi where the resemblance was just for a few cheap gags near the start.

Could just be the lack of runtime talking. They spent a lot less time on the "you have powers, now hunt monsters" bit, fully avoided the fanservice pandering (hot springs/beach episode anyone?) and only skirted the let's talk about boys for several episodes thing (which featured a total of one quickly dealt with love triangle) and rather quickly transitioned into the eventual "good guy gone bad" and "bad guy gone good" plots before running into a final showdown scenario. That being said, not exactly a heavy watcher of MS anime.

Crosshatch is gone, garren is in danger of going the same route if he makes a nuisance of himself, and the other idiots (IE: Kermit) are still around, for now.

I think the closest i've ever gotten to a Magical Girl anime was Kannagi.
